日本のゲームを英語に翻訳する時に「四天王」に当たる単語も概念もないからえらい苦労するらしい
一番一般的な翻訳だと“Four Heavenly Kings”になるらしくて、これは直訳臭いけど200年前くらいの書物にも出てくる伝統的な翻訳だとか
けど、それだとなんか色々イメージ違ってしまって元の意味から違ってしまうことも多くて困るらしい
まず、Heavenly Kingsがまず西洋でのイメージからするとキリスト的な天国の王をイメージしてしまって、仏教的な四天王と違ってしまう
そして、四つの天の王と言えばなんか凄いものに聞こえるのに、日本での使い方を見ると落語家四天王だったり俳優四天王だったり俗っぽい使い方に合わない
あとは、Heavenlyと付く割に全然宗教的な要素が無い使い方が多いのも困る
しかも、kingと書いてしまうと王様つまり男なはずなのに、普通にアイドル四天王だの女が入ってるのも意味分からん
あげく、肉料理四天王だの水煮缶四天王だの、生き物ですら無いものに使われるともはや全く意味が違ってしまう
なので、幾ら一般的とは言っても“Four Heavenly Kings”では翻訳としておかしい場合が多いんだと
日本のゲームに慣れた人なら「あ、四天王のことだな」って分かる人も、今では結構いるらしいけど、まぁ一般的では無いらしい
結局はその場その場で翻訳者が頑張るしか無い、って結論になってるけど
頑張った結果、FF4とか移植されたハードごとに「四天王」の翻訳が違って
"Four Fiends of Elements" "Fearsome Four" "Four Elemental Lords" "Four Archfiends"
とかなってるらしい
